“Indulging in snacks between meals does not have to be detrimental to one’s diet if you make smart choices,” says Kierra Brown, RD, Bariatric Dietitian for AtlantiCare. “To build a satisfying snack try to combine at least two food groups to get all the benefits of the macro and micronutrients.”
Healthy Snacks for Weight Loss
1. Grapes
“A cup of grapes is roughly 100 calories—and even though they are higher in sugar than some other fruits, they can help curb your sweet tooth,” says Brown. “They can also provide much-needed hydration if your fluid intake is lacking or you need something to quench a dry mouth.”
2. Jerky
“Made from beef, turkey or plant-based proteins, jerky can be an excellent, portable high protein snack,” says Brown. “Different brands and flavors contain varying amounts of salt so be sure to check the nutrition facts label to look for options with less than 200mg sodium per serving.” Two options that come in right at or slightly above that mark: Country Archer Grass-Fed Mini Beef Sticks and The New Primal Classic Beef Sticks.
3. Strawberries
They are usually bursting with flavor, but strawberries are also stuffed with a range of healthy nutrients. They’re a good source of fiber and potassium, among other good things. According to the USDA, a 3.5-ounce serving of strawberries has .64g of protein, 161mg of potassium, and around 36 calories.
4. Lemons
The USDA says this zesty fruit is a good source of protein, fiber, and Vitamin C, among other nutritious components. Lemons are also rich in flavonoids, which have a variety of important health benefits including helping to lower the risk of cancer and heart disease.
5. Emerald Dry Roasted Almonds 100-Calorie Packs
“At just 100 calories, these portion-controlled nuts are pure plant-powered goodness!” says Justine Rosado, RD, Certified Diabetes and Care Education Specialist, and founder of The Nutrition Queens, a telehealth nutrition counseling business. “They’re high in healthy fats, protein and low in carbohydrates to keep you feeling satiated all day long.”
6. Oranges
Everyone associates oranges with Vitamin C—and they certainly have plenty of that—but this refreshing citrus fruit is also a great source of fiber, potassium and folate. Plus, they are rich in antioxidants and contain no fat or sodium.
7. Spinach
It likely won’t come as a big surprise that spinach is one of the healthiest vegetables—and among the healthiest foods in general. It is rich in a long list of nutrients, including fiber, Vitamin C, nitrates and iron. While you can eat spinach raw, it’s versatile enough to be worked into a wide range of menu options, from salads (of course) to desserts and smoothies. We recommend using the Beast Health Blender to make terrific smoothies in a snap.
8. Rice cakes with nut butter
“With no added sugar or salt, a plain rice cake is less than 50 calories,” says Brown. “To boost its nutritional profile, top your rice cake with almond butter or peanut butter for a source of protein and healthy fats.” We suggest trying these salt-free rice cakes from Quaker, and topping them with Justin’s Cinnamon Almond Butter, which has just 60mg of sodium and 4g of total sugar per serving.
9. Grapefruit
Like oranges, grapefruits are a citrus fruit packed with nutrients (although their stronger, tart flavor may not appeal to everyone). This treat is easy to eat in its natural state and is a good source of calcium and Vitamin C, among other beneficial contents. Grapefruit can interact with some medications, though, so be sure to read the labels on any medicines you are taking before you enjoy a grapefruit.
10. Bamba Peanut Snacks from Trader Joe’s
“Bamba is absolutely addictive,” says Rosado. “They’re low calorie (160 calories for 40 pieces, to be exact), texturally pleasing, and contain less than five ingredients. They are like an adult puffy cheese doodle that you can feel good about eating.”
11. Hope Foods Hummus
This hummus from Hope Foods—which has around 60 calories per serving—is available in Original Recipe, Red Pepper, Avocado Lime, Thai Coconut Curry and other flavors. “Hummus provides needed protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats to make a satisfying snack,” says Brown. “Paired with sliced vegetables such as cucumbers, bell peppers, or carrots, you get an additional crunch, color, and fiber!” Be sure to check out the dips and guacamole from Hope Foods, as well.
12. Beets
Beets are rich in nutrients like folate and are also packed with nitrates, which are said to help reduce high blood pressure. They can be used as a topping or garnish for salads or other meals—or are also great all on their own. Try roasting them with avocado oil like this great variety from Chosen Foods.
13. Broccoli
Like many green vegetables, broccoli is packed with healthy nutrients. It’s a good source of protein, iron, and potassium, among other good things. It also helps you fill full without a lot of calories. You can prepare it in many different ways, to vary the texture and flavor profile. Try tossing it in olive oil or avocado oil or topping it with lemon juice, red pepper, or parmesan cheese.
14. Bob’s Red Mill White Popcorn
“Popcorn is considered a whole grain and far healthier than chips,” says Johna Burdeos, RD. “By buying plain popcorn kernels, you control the amount of ingredients you add on, and therefore the calories. A little drizzle of olive oil and a bit of salt will give plain popcorn flavor without all the extra calories from typical movie-style popcorn.” This white popcorn from Bob’s Red Mill has 100 calories, 0mg of sodium, and 0 total sugars.
15. Apples
The USDA says a 100g (3.5 ounce) Honeycrisp apple has 60 calories, 1.7g of fiber, and 98mg of potassium. They are also versatile, as you can prepare them in so many different ways and use them to make a wide range of snacks and meals. Burdeos suggests pairing apples with plain peanut butter (like this classic peanut butter from Justin’s) or plain nuts. “The fiber and protein combination will satisfy you, you get the natural sweetness from fruit, and crunch satisfaction from peanuts or nuts.”
16. Chia pudding
“A couple of tablespoons of chia seeds stirred into a non-dairy milk and then left to thicken is very satisfying, and because you have to chew it a little bit, is more satiating than a beverage!” says Dana Ellis Hunnes PhD, MPH, RD, senior dietitian at UCLA Medical Center, assistant professor at UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health, and author of Recipe For Survival. “Plus, it’s very high in fiber and omega-3 from plants, and decent in plant-based protein!” We suggest using Bob’s Red Mill Organic Chia Seeds.
17. Zucchini
Often called a superfood because of its nutritional benefits, zucchini is rich in a variety of important nutrients like antioxidants. Because it contains a lot of water and has a high fiber content, it can keep you hydrated while making you feel full and also promoting a healthy digestive system. For a healthy and delicious treat, make your own veggie chips with zucchini and other veggies. Use avocado oil and check out the Basquettes grilling baskets, which are perfect for making veggies and other foods on the grill.
18. Chickpeas
“If you have an air fryer, try air-fried chickpeas,” Burdeos suggests. “Chickpeas are a good source of fiber, protein and antioxidants. You can season them with just a drizzle of healthy olive oil and seasonings of your choice.” A great choice for drizzling: Chefs Life Finishing Oil, an extra virgin olive oil designed to accentuate your finished dishes with a rich flavor that adds the perfect touch. For a ready-to-eat option, try Festive Chickpeas, available in flavors including Sour Cream, Ranch and Sea Salt.
19. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are packed with antioxidants, which can help protect your body from a range of diseases and health conditions. They are also a good source of calcium, potassium and Vitamin C. 21. Red peppers
Peppers in general are a good healthy diet pick, because they are packed with nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin A and fiber. But the red peppers are believed to be especially high in antioxidants. They can be eaten in raw form—often added to salads—and they can also add a pop of flavor to other cooked foods, such as eggs and stir fry.
22. Eggplant
Eggplant is low in calories and has almost no fat. But it is packed with fiber and is also a good source of numerous other nutrients. Cook eggplant on the grill or roast it in the oven—baste it with olive oil and add some seasonings, if desired—to preserve the nutritional value.
23. Carrots
The old adage about carrots being good for your eyesight isn’t just an old wives’ tale. This vegetable is rich in beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A—and has been linked to improved eye health and the prevention of eye diseases, among a number of other health benefits.
24. Kale
We know some people may feel this trendy vegetable neared the point of being overhyped, but it is worthy of a spot among the healthy vegetable all-star roster. It is incredibly dense in nutrients, and is a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and iron, among other things. Enjoy it as the foundation of a salad or mixed into a smoothie (try using the BlendJet 2 portable blender to make quick and easy smoothies anywhere).
