In light of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the Grammy winner is doing her part to support reproductive healthcare and access to safe abortions through a new fund, which she announced the launch of on Instagram, coinciding with The International Day of the Girl on Tuesday, Oct. 11. “I never thought I would see the day that a fundamental civil right for half of the population would be taken away in this country,” she began in the caption. “We must push back.” She explained that it’s what motivated her to launch the Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights Fund at the Tides Foundation before continuing, “It is more important than ever that organizations advancing women’s rights and outreach programs ensuring access to safe and legal abortion, reproductive health, and prenatal care have the financial resources they need to do their life saving work.” To help support those programs, Lauper announced the new Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights t-shirt, which is a new take on a popular design she originally released in 2017, when the phrase was used regularly on Women’s March signs. “I believe in the United States and I believe that we will not only regain the right to choose, but one day actually secure full equality,” the “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” songstress began to wrap up the camption, before encouraging her followers to visit the link in her bio for more information. In her link in bio, Lauper links not only to more information about the new fund, but voter registration and her organization True Colors United, which supports homeless youth—especially those who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. The new shirt, which Lauper is wearing in her Instagram video, is available for $30 in two different cuts and colors. Net proceeds benefit the Tides Fund, which supports the environment, health care, labor issues, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights and human rights. As Lauper specified in the video, this shirt specifically “will be funding organizations that advance women’s rights and health.” Lauper also rerecorded “Sally’s Pigeons,” a 1993 track that details the experience of countless women who have died after having a “back-alley” abortion, earlier this year. Yesterday she dropped a new lyric video for the acoustic version. Lauper has long been an advocate for women, the LGBTQ+ community, those living with HIV/AIDS and more. She’ll be planning more fundraising opportunities for the new fund throughout the year, but in the meantime, you can also donate directly. More News:
