Did Owen die on Grey’s Anatomy?
In the episode that closed out 2021, Cormac, Owen, and Owen’s new wife Teddy (Kim Raver) were all in a car accident while transporting a heart for Owen’s nephew, Farouk (Bardia Seiri), who was in Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Teddy and Cormac were able to climb out of the car, along with the heart in its cooler, but Owen was trapped in the car when it went over a cliff in the final moments of the episode. In a crossover episode with the 2022 midseason premiere of Station 19, firefighters were able to extract Owen from the car after some tricky maneuvering, which is where Grey’s Anatomy picked up. In an episode titled “No Time to Die,” the doctors of Grey Sloan jumped into action to save Owen, whose injuries were ultimately pronounced critical, but not life-threatening. And although Owen’s ex-wife Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and her ex-boyfriend/father of her child Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) bickered over whether to treat his spine or his leg first—risking either paralysis or amputation—Owen came out of the operating room with both legs still intact and, we assume, fully functional.
Why is Dr. Hayes leaving Grey’s Anatomy?
While Owen managed to survive his brush with death, it was a very close call, and in the moments before the car went over the cliff, he made a confession to Cormac: He recently assisted a terminally ill veteran in ending his life, and he’s made a promise to do the same for several others. He told Cormac where the drugs he’d procured was, and how to get them to the veterans, hoping that Dr. Hayes would follow through on his promise if Owen should die. However, Cormac does not see physician-assisted suicide the same way Owen does, and spent most of “No Time to Die” grappling with the ethics of keeping Owen’s secret, and whether it conflicted with the vow he took to “do no harm.” Ultimately, it appeared as though he’d made up his mind to inform the Chief of Surgery, Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), that Owen had stolen drugs and used them to end a patient’s life—but he surprised us all with instead handing in his resignation. Throughout Season 18, Cormac has wrestled with how he fits into the world of Grey Sloan, with his potential relationship with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) fizzling out almost as soon as it began, since it seemed that his teenage sons were not ready for their father to date yet after all. And as Cormac admitted in “No Time to Die,” he’s not sure that he’s ready either. Faced with the choice between turning in his friend, or potentially losing his medical license as an accessory to a crime, Cormac apparently decided to take secret option number three and leave the country instead, bringing his boys back to Ireland in the hopes that they’ll all be able to do the healing they all still very much need following the death of Cormac’s wife several years prior.
Who is Dr. Cormac Hayes on Grey’s Anatomy?
Sometime following the death of Cormac’s wife, Abigail, he worked at the Klausman Institute for Medical Research in Zurich, Switzerland, where original Grey’s Anatomy cast member and Meredith’s bestie Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) is the chief medical officer. Cristina saw in Cormac a potential partner for her “person,” and arranged for him to make the move to Seattle to fill the hole in pediatrics left by Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and maybe also the hole in Meredith’s heart left by her late husband, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). But filling Derek’s ferry boat scrub cap has proven to be a tricky thing, with several suitors for Meredith coming and going since Derek’s death after the chemistry just couldn’t match up to what she had with McDreamy. Cormac was thrown an additional curveball when Season 17 was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, causing Meredith to spend most of the season in a coma. Although Cormac had some tender moments by her bedside, by the time she woke up, it seemed that the wind had gone out of the sails of whatever potential that relationship might have had. Then in Season 18, Grey’s Anatomy surprised us all by bringing back former one-time guest star Scott Speedman as series regular Nick Marsh, capitalizing on the chemistry he had with Meredith several seasons ago. Once Meredith was solidly paired off with Nick, Cormac was left without much to do, since he hadn’t really made any other strong ties at the hospital other than Meredith.
Why is Richard Flood leaving Grey’s Anatomy?
As of Feb. 24, the night of the Season 18 midseason premiere, neither Flood nor Grey’s showrunner Krista Vernoff has commented publicly on Flood’s departure from the series, although Deadline reports that there was talk of a possible exit before Season 18 even began. However, we know from experience that gone is never really gone on Grey’s Anatomy, and since Hayes has not been killed off, we assume the door remains open for Flood to someday step into the role again.
