Last month, Lyons Magnus voluntarily recalled 53 products due to possible contamination with a bacteria known as Cronobacter sakazakii, a foodborne pathogen that is well-equipped to survive in arid environments like powdered drink mixes according to a study published in the National Library of Medicine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says infection from the germ—which can cause fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infections—can be very serious for older people and people with HIV, organ transplants, or cancer, according to a report from WGNTV. On August 10, the company announced that it was expanding the number of products to be taken off shelves “in furtherance of its longstanding commitment to food safety” and with “continued collaboration and consultation with the FDA.” In addition to the possible Cronobacter sakazakii contamination, the expanded recall warns that products may also contain Clostridium botulinum, which can cause a severe form of food poisoning anywhere from six hours to two weeks after consumption. Symptoms of botulism can include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness. In more severe cases it can lead to respiratory paralysis, which can result in death without medical intervention. The updated recall includes new products and additional lot codes for previously recalled products, which include brands like Organic Valley, Oatly, Ensure Harvest, PediaSure Harvest, Premier Protein, Kate Farms, and many more. All products recalled were distributed starting in April of 2021, according to the FDA. The company urges anyone with a recalled product to throw it away or return it to where it was purchased for a refund. For the full list of recalled products, visit the FDA’s website.
