The actor took to Instagram ahead of the show’s premiere this Monday, Sept. 19, on NBC, to “quiet the rumors and move on” from them. “First of all, thanks for hanging around through the decades!” he addressed fans of the original series, first. “Here’s the simple version of what’s going on with the Quantum Leap reboot and me: I have no connection with the new show, either in front of the camera or behind it.” He went on to explain how he received a copy of the script after the pilot was sold in January, as it featured his character, Sam Beckett. “…which makes sense, right? As so many of you have been asking me the last several months, ‘How could you do QL without Sam?’ (or Al, for that matter) Well, I guess we’re about to find out.”
He called it a “very difficult decision” to say no to working on the project, “a decision that has upset and confused so many fans of the original series.” Still, he says, “I am crossing my fingers that this new cast and crew are lucky enough to tap into the magic that propelled the original Quantum Leap into the hearts and minds of generations past and present.” He wrapped up his message by writing, “I wish them good luck and happy leaping!” So it seems like the reappearance of Sam Beckett is off the table, though we’ve learned to never say never. It’s clear the door remains open for Bakula, should he ever change his mind. “We would love to have him. There is no Quantum Leap without Scott Bakula,” Raymond Lee, who plays Dr. Ben Seong in the reboot, told TVLine. “I hope he can watch the show and sign off on it, and one day agree to be on it,” he said, confirming the offer was out there.
