Verizon opened in 2000, and like most cellular service providers, had its ups and downs over the years. With the rise of iPhones, 5G service, and other changes in the industry, it’s tough to hold onto customers. Now, Verizon is enacting a plan that will allow the company to discontinue its 3G network. According to Verizon’s official website, the company will send “free 4G LTE devices for 3G CDMA customers,” but as expected, there are conditions that must be met to receive a new device. The recent announcement means that anyone who has an old phone that uses the 3G CDMA network will be unable to use their current phone by the end of 2022, which is when Verizon says it plans to retire the 3G network. Verizon will send service subscribers who fall under this category either a 4G LTE Orbic Journey V, a TCL FLIP Pro, or a Nokia 2720 V Flip phone, promising that the customers’ plans or contracts will remain the same after switching devices. This means that customers shouldn’t expect to see a brand new iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, or Google Pixel in their mailbox. If you want to upgrade to anything other than one of these three flip phones, you will have to visit a store or the website and make a purchase just like everyone else. But if you are on the 3G plan and recently noticed that your battery life isn’t lasting as long or calls aren’t sounding as clear, Verizon has got you covered. Of course, if you don’t want the new phone, Verizon advises people to “call (800) 922-0204 and ask to ‘decline the free phone for CDMA Sunset.’” According to KTLA, Verizon is one of the last few cellular service providers that still have a 3G network up and running. AT&T and Sprint already retired their 3G networks in February and March of this year, respectively, while T-Mobile is set to do the same this month.
